info.wiesbaden@dorint.comFounded by Bernhard von Clairvaux in 1136, this former Cistercian cloister - now a monument - is one of the most impressive examples of the medieval building style in Europe today. It was as the location for the filming of Umberto Eco’s ‘The Name of the Rose’ a few years ago, that the expansive complex with its Romanesque and early Gothic interiors became known to an international audience. However, Eberbach owes its true international standing to the monks who cultivated the art of winemaking here for 700 years. Today the 12 historic wine presses in the refectory bear witness to the enormous contribution made by the cloister’s vineyards.
